Cabaser® is used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease.

It is used as a second line therapy after your Doctor has tried other treatments that have not worked or for people who are already taking other medicines to manage the signs and symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Cabergoline belongs to a group of medicines called dopamine agonists. The tablets contain the active ingredient Cabergoline which acts in a similar way to a chemical in the body called dopamine.

Pfizer will discontinue the production and distribution of the Cabaser® 4mg tablets from the European Union from 31 October 2008, following a European safety review.

In a letter to UK doctors, the pharmaceutical company said that the European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has concluded that Cabaser and a related drug Dostinex, used to treat hyperprolactinaemia (raised levels of the hormone prolactin in the blood), were associated with the onset of cardiac valve problems known as fibrotic cardiac valvulopathy.

The CHMP had consequently restricted the maximum recommended dose of Cabaser to 3mg a day, with the recommended starting dose of 0.5mg per week and the therapeutic dose of 1mg per week.

Cabaser® and Dostinex® are now contraindicated in people with a history of fibrotic disorders and evidence of cardiac vavulopathy. Anyone taking these medications must undergo echocardiographic monitoring of the heart before treatment and regularly during treatment, with doctors directed to monitor clinical evidence of other fibrotic disorders.
